Hey, bestie! 🐾 Are you thinking about bringing your dog along on your next road trip? Trust me—you’re barking up the right tree. šŸ˜‰

I’ve taken my own pup, Kylo, on several road trips, including one that had us on the road for six days straight. After plenty of trial, error, and tail wags, I learned that the secret to a smooth trip is all in the prep. ✨

In this guide, I’m sharing everything I’ve learned from firsthand experience.

With a little planning and the right gear, you and your pup will be ready to hit the road, chase new adventures, and make memories together.

Here’s what to bring for your fluffy friend: dog road trip essentials for a pawsome adventure! 🐾

Doggie Snacks:

Dog snacks
Kylo's snacks: carrots, bell peppers, and blueberries

Other than Kylo's dog food, which is Farmer's DogĀ food packs, I brought a zip lock of some of his favoriteĀ fruits and veggies.

I cut up some bell peppers and threw in some washed blueberries and baby carrots for our road trip ahead.

Kylo would get jealous any time he saw us snacking, so it's nice to keep something for him in the cooler too!Ā (healthier than a pup cup too!)

Snack Ideas:

  • Bell peppers

  • Baby carrots

  • Blueberries

  • Celery

  • Apples

Doggie Water Bottles:

I'm sure you already know about portable water bottlesĀ for dogs, but sometimes people forgetĀ to bring them for long road trips!

This was a game changerĀ for us. Whenever Kylo was thirsty, he didn't have to wait for us to stop. He would start licking his cup, and we would squeeze the water out for him to drink. It was a great system thatĀ kept everyone happy!

Keeping a doggie water bottle for your pup on road trips doesn't necessarily mean having to stop 20 times for their bathroom break; it just ensures they are staying hydrated.

Doggie Toys/Bones:

Every dog parent wants to look back during a road trip to see that their dog is either enjoying the ride orĀ relaxing during a long drive.

One way to bring home on the road for your dogs is to bring some of their favorite toys. Kylo doesn't get to play fetch or anything, but having his toys with him is like Linus bringing his security blanket everywhere.

I also recommend bringing whatever treats or yak-cheese sticksĀ your dog can chew on so they aren't bored and so they can tire themselvesĀ out a little. It's a win-win for everyone!

Doggie Beds:

Bringing a cozy bed for your pup is a total game changer! I pack two: his crate bed for the Airbnb and a car bed that extends the backseat (make sure to get the one with a hard bottom)! šŸ¶šŸ’¤ It even has netting and a seat belt, giving him plenty of room to stretch out safely.

The crate bed is his bed from home (sometimes I get a little jealous) šŸ˜…. Having both beds keeps Kylo comfy and secure, making the whole road trip smoother for both of us.

Doggie Food:

Kylo's Farmer's Dog Food

We feed him The Farmer’s Dog, so instead of dry kibble, we bring multiple frozen packs for each day and keep them in our cooler. 🧊🐶

Before we hit the road, I portion everything out and store it with ice packs so it stays fresh. By mealtime, it’s perfectly thawed and ready to go—super easy and no stress.

Keeping his diet consistent has made a huge difference—no upset stomach and a much happier pup. If your dog is used to a specific food, I definitely recommend sticking with it while traveling!

Doggie Water & Food Bowls:

Most people prefer collapsible bowls for travel, but we actually bring Kylo’s full food and water setup—elevated stand and all (thankfully it folds). šŸ˜…

Since he’s a medium-sized dog, it’s just more comfortable for him to eat and drink from the bowls he’s used to. It also helps keep things less messy and more familiar for him, especially in new environments.

It does take up a bit more space, but it’s totally worth it. Keeping his routine consistent—just like with his food—helps him feel more at ease on the road and makes mealtime super easy once we arrive.

Doggie Leash/Collar:

Don’t forget a reliable leash and collar—this one’s a must for every stop along the way! 🐶

We use a hands-free leash that comes with a belt and a little phone pouch, and it has honestly been such a game changer. It makes walking Kylo so much easier, especially at rest stops or when my hands are already full with snacks, keys, or iced coffee. ā˜•ļø

Having everything in one place keeps things simple and stress-free, and it gives him the freedom to explore safely while I stay hands-free. Trust me, once you try it, you won’t go back. šŸ˜‰

Doggie Suitcase:

Kylo's Suitcase

Kylo has his own little suitcase, and honestly… it just makes everything so much easier. 🧳🐶

We use it to pack all of his essentials—wipes, medicine, toys, and anything else he’ll need on the trip. Instead of digging through multiple bags, everything is in one place and easy to grab whenever we need it.

It also helps me stay organized and makes unpacking at our Airbnb way quicker. Plus, there’s just something adorable about your pup having their own luggage, right? šŸ˜‰

Doggie Medicine/Cone:

If your pup is currently taking medication or recovering from anything, don’t forget to pack their meds and any comfort items they might need. šŸ’ŠšŸ¶

For Kylo, we brought his little donut cone (way cuter—and comfier—than the traditional cone of shame šŸ˜‚). It helped prevent him from licking or scratching where he shouldn’t.

Travel can already be a lot for dogs, so keeping up with their routine—whether that’s medication or just helping them stay calm—makes a big difference. If your dog needs a little extra care, having these essentials on hand will give you total peace of mind. ✨
